Graduate Writing Support

Graduate Writing Support

Is it difficult to meet the writing targets that you set for yourself? Do you sometimes find yourself overwhelmed by the writing process? For many graduate students, writing can be an isolating experience and finding motivation can sometimes be difficult.

The ERC’s Graduate Writing Support programs build cross-disciplinary community to support you in setting realistic goals and maintaining consistent progress toward your writing objectives. The application for our fall groups is now closed, but please feel free to join our Thursday Write Togethers in person or virtually! If you have questions about any of our Graduate Writing Support initiatives, please contact Sarah Garibova, Assistant Director for Outreach.

Thursday Write Together

Join our Thursday Write Together sessions for structured writing time in a quiet, goal-oriented space where you can write with the camaraderie and support of your peers! This hybrid (in person and virtual) writing space is open to all graduate and professional school students who are actively writing research proposals, scholarly articles, and chapters.

Write Togethers will convene on Thursdays, 2-5pm ET in 100 Bay State Road, room 545. Alternatively, you can join us remotely (Zoom link, BU login required).

Each session will begin with a brief goal setting exercise, followed by focused writing time. At the end of each Write Together, participants will share their progress and reflect on their writing process. Please arrive a few minutes before 2pm to sign in & set up your work station. As a courtesy to your fellow writers, please plan to stay for the duration of the three hour session; late arrivals and early departures are disruptive to your fellow participants.

Fall 2021 dates: September 23 and 30; October 7, 14, 21, 28; November 4 and 18; December 2 and 9.

Monday Dissertation Writing Group

Open to doctoral candidates who are writing either their dissertation prospectus or dissertation, the Monday Dissertation Writing Group offers structured writing time and a community of like-minded peers so you can make significant progress on your dissertation and other related writing projects! The group convenes via Zoom each Monday, 10am-1pm ET, starting the second week of classes and continuing through the last week of classes.

The beginning of each three hour session is devoted to setting goals for the day and sharing them with peers. At the end of each session, the group discusses progress made, writing challenges, and victories while setting writing goals for the coming week. We will also provide opportunities for reflection and discussion and share effective writing strategies you can build into your routine. The roughly 2.5 hours in the middle of each session are devoted to writing! Join us to build camaraderie across disciplines, combat the isolation that can accompany the dissertation process, and, most importantly, get words on the page!

In order to be eligible for the Dissertation Writing Group, you must:

  • be a doctoral candidate
  • be actively writing either your dissertation prospectus or dissertation
  • identify specific, attainable writing goals for Fall 2021
  • commit to regular attendance in the group. Those with significant conflicts are discouraged from applying. If a schedule conflict arises, communicate this promptly to the DWG facilitator

The application for the Fall 2021 Dissertation Writing Group is now closed. Please check back later in the semester for information regarding our spring offerings.

Accountability Partners

Open to all BU master’s, professional, and Ph.D. students, Accountability Partners matches you with an interdisciplinary group of 3-4 other graduate writers for weekly goal setting and accountability check ins.

During each meeting, groups report on writing progress, reflect on challenges, and set goals for the coming week. Groups are also encouraged to maintain a shared writing log, and each group will be provided with a private Slack channel where members can share updates and resources throughout the week.

In order to be eligible for Accountability Partners, you must:

  • be a graduate student in the process of writing a scholarly article, thesis, dissertation prospectus, dissertation chapter, or similar
  • identify specific, attainable writing goals for the semester
  • be available to meet synchronously once per week for a one hour check in. Optionally, groups are welcome to schedule additional meeting times for coworking
  • complete an online Accountability Partners orientation and submit a group contract to the ERC by Friday, September 10

The application for the Fall 2021 Accountability Partners program is now closed. Please check back later in the semester for information regarding our spring offerings.

Writing Workshop Circles

Are you looking for opportunities to receive peer feedback on your writing? Are you curious how your research will be received by scholars in other fields? Writing Workshop Circles invites graduate students to share their work-in-progress and receive feedback from scholars outside of their committee and department. Each Workshop Circle typically consists of four members who are in similar stages of their graduate degrees.

Each group will collectively decide on a meeting schedule and submit a group contract to the ERC. Workshop Circles will also receive guidance and best practices for offering and receiving peer feedback. Please note: writing feedback will focus on higher-order concerns such as argumentation and structure rather than sentence-level proofreading.

In order to be eligible for a Writing Workshop Circle, you must:

  • be a graduate student in the process of writing a scholarly article, thesis, dissertation prospectus, dissertation chapter, or similar
  • be available to meet at least four times during the semester to workshop group members’ writing on a rotating basis. Groups are welcome to schedule additional meetings for coworking or workshopping additional drafts
  • complete an online Workshop Circle orientation and submit a group contract to the ERC

The application for the Fall 2021 Workshop Circles program is now closed. Please check back later in the semester for information regarding our spring offerings.
