In School and After School

The Early Learning Center (ELC) serves pre-kindergarten through second grade children. One teacher and one paraprofessional direct each of ELC’s six classrooms.

BUILD provides in-school and after-school services Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Tutors work under the direct supervision of individual teachers and aid students in reading and writing. Tutors assist with journal writing, reading aloud, and phonics drills. They also facilitate students’ work at literacy centers.

Directions: Take the B or C line to Washington Street.

  • From Commonwealth Avenue — walk down Washington Street toward Beacon Street and Whole Foods market.
  • From Beacon Street — walk up Washington Street toward Commonwealth Avenue.

After school

The after-school program serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Tutors work in one of two classes, reading with small groups and with children individually, engaging with worksheets, and leading literacy games. This program is on Wednesday and Friday.

Directions: Take the Green Line to Copley. Walk towards Saint James Ave @ Dartmouth St bus stop across the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel. Ride the 10 bus towards City Point for 4 stops and get off at 43 West Dedham St. Walk towards Shawmut Ave until you see the Blackstone

After school

The after-school program serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Tutors work with students by reading with small groups and with children individually, helping out with homework, and leading literacy games. This program runs from Monday to Friday. BUILD tutors also provide math tutoring through America Counts at this site.


Directions: Take the Green Line to Boylston Station. Walk south on Tremont St towards Boylston St. Turn left onto Oak St. Then turn left onto Ash St.

Edison K-8 School

In-School

BUILD supports Edison during their in-school hours from 9am-3pm, serving kindergarten to fifth grade students. This program runs Monday through Friday.

BUILD tutors BUILD tutors are assigned to classrooms where they offer support to students 1 on 1 and in small groups. Tutors at this site support both literacy and math based class blocks.

Directions: Take the 57 bus to Washington St. and Foster St. Continue down Foster St. and take a right on Glenmount Rd. Edison K-8 will be on your left..

Hurley Elementary School

After school

This after-school program serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Tutors work in one of two classes, reading with small groups and with children individually, helping with homework and leading literacy games or providing math support. This program is Monday through Thursday. Tutors engaged with students during other program events to facilitate relationship development and program consistency. This site operates successfully with an emphasis on bilingual tutoring (Spanish/English) to best assist their diverse student body.

Directions: Take the BU Shuttle to the Medical Campus. Walk back on Albany Street toward Massachusetts Avenue. Before Mass Ave, turn right on E. Concord Street, then left on Washington, and right on Worchester Street.

Mendell Elementary School Afterschool

After school Program

Tutors at the Mendell site provide after-school support with homework help, reading activities, and lead literacy games with students through the YMCA. Tutors are split between younger students (K1-K2) and older students (1-5) between two classes. Tutors aim to foster a collaborative environment which provides support to students with their learning and homework.

Directions: Take green line B inbound towards Government Center, get off at Copley Stop, Walk to Back Bay, Get on the Orange line outbound towards Forest Hills, Get off at Roxbury Crossing, Walk .4 miles to destination.

Tobin Elementary School

In School

BUILD operates an in-school tutoring program at the Tobin School Monday through Friday. Tutors work with elementary and middle school students with guidance from classroom teachers. Many students are English language learners.

Directions: By subway, take the B line to Hynes Convention Center, Walk to Symphony, Take green line B outbound towards Heath Street, Get off at Longwood Medical Area, Walk to destination.

Trotter Elementary School

In School

BUILD provides support during the school day Monday through Friday.

Tutors are placed in third- and fourth-grade classrooms and assist teachers during the literacy block. Tutors work with both small groups and individual children on reading fluency and reading comprehension skills.

Directions: A Lyft is provided to and from this site.

Winship Elementary School

In School and After School

BUILD supports in-school and after-school tutoring. The in-school program runs Monday through Friday, while the after-school program runs Monday-Thursday.

Tutors in the in-school program are placed in classrooms to assist teachers with kindergarten to fifth grade students, many of whom are English Language Learners. Tutors work during the morning shift from 9-12 or the afternoon shift from 1-4pm, and support classroom activities through one on one or group tutoring. Tutors in the after-school program support students in completing homework, and run literacy games and activities.

Directions: Take the number 57 bus to Washington Street & Leicester Street.
