At Boston University, we offer top-notch doctoral and terminal MA programs in both French Language & Literature and Hispanic Language & Literatures, taught by a distinguished faculty. Our programs provide rigorous training in the literature, culture, and film of the Francophone and Hispanophone worlds.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at BU is currently undergoing an extensive review of all doctoral programs in the humanities and social sciences, and as a result admission to our PhD programs has been paused for the 2026 cycle. We expect to reopen admissions for fall 2027.

Our terminal MA programs are open for admission for fall 2026.

Financial Support

Financial support is a key piece of planning for graduate school. At Boston University, we are committed to ensuring that you receive the support you need to succeed in your studies. The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the Romance Studies Department, and other university sources provide support for tuition and living expenses during the academic year and also for student travel and research.

All students admitted to a doctoral program in Romance Studies are awarded a five year fellowship (with a mix of service and non-service terms) which provides year-round funding support, including:

  • Coverage of all mandatory tuition and fees
  • Health insurance
  • A highly competitive stipend for living expenses

Additional information on financial support for doctoral students can be found on the GRS website.

Students in our terminal MA programs are elligible for scholarships to reduce their tuition costs, as well as a variety of student loan programs. Please reach out to GRS for assistance with planning how to finance your MA education.

Please note that students in the terminal MA programs are not eligible for many forms of financial support. However, students are welcome to apply for the doctoral programs, which include the option to receive an MA en route to the PhD, directly after completing their bachelor’s degree. Students in a doctoral program are eligible to receive financial support while working on the MA portion of the doctoral program.
