What school are you attending and what you are studying?
I am attending Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine studying medicine as part of the MD program. I chose to apply to this school because of its amazing community and social justice advocacy. Something that makes BUSM unique is that it is extremely involved in social justice here in Boston and beyond to help marginalized communities and those needing more support. BUSM has so many unique initiatives for the community like the Outreach Van Project, BMC roof-top farm and pantry, and refugee clinic. BUSM has so many amazing opportunities for students through research, service initiatives, and even global health opportunities.
Is there a specialization and/or specific population you are interested in?
I have always been interested in cardiology and addressing cardiovascular disease in marginalized communities, as they are disproportionately affected. I am particularly interested in helping immigrants and refugees due to the unique inequities they face such as language barriers, racism, and reduced access to healthcare. My interests in these fields were sparked by my own immigrant family’s experiences with cardiovascular disease and barriers in accessing healthcare. I learned more about these fields through shadowing, research, volunteering, and even through my public health minor at BU.
What are one or two of your favorite experiences/activities and why?
One of my favorite activities (as listed in my application) was the BU Arabs Club that my friends and I created during my time at BU. We started with nothing but created an amazing club, having events with over 300 people in attendance! I also met my best friends through here, and I continue to see them and be part of their life milestones!
Did you take gap years?
Yes, I took 2 gap years and worked at Boston Medical Center during that time as a medical assistant. I also took medical Spanish course and of course worked on my MCAT and application for medical school!
What was your favorite BU course and why?
While I loved so many of my BU courses, my favorite must be the Organization and Delivery of Healthcare in the U.S. I learned so many valuable things in this course that I still use today regarding the healthcare system, insurance, and policies that affect care. This course even made a debut during my interview with BUSM, as my interviewer was impressed by the course and how important it was for future doctors to learn.
Were you involved in any clubs/groups at BU?
Yes, as I mentioned, I was involved in BU Arabs as the Treasurer and was the first Treasurer of the club! My close friends and I were a large e-board where we would plan cultural events, social bonding, and even large parties for the whole Boston Arab community. Another club I founded was the BU Emergency Medical Services Club. I created this club since I was passionate about teaching others life-saving skills that they could use in their everyday lives. We held social events, vital signs and CPR training, and even a panel with ambulance companies to educate students on how to get involved and get employed.
Have you always known you wanted to be a doctor?
I feel like I have always known deep down that I wanted to be a doctor but didn’t outwardly recognize it until I was about 12 years old. My biggest inspiration is my grandma, since she taught me the importance of health in life and was someone I took care of at a young age.
What resources at BU did you find most helpful or want to spotlight that others might not know about?
I found the pre-health office truly essential for my learning and growth. I will be the first doctor in my family, and I had no idea what the MCAT was, the application timeline, or even my course requirements. The events they host are super helpful, so make sure to subscribe to the pre-health email and stay updated! The pre-health advisors at BU, specifically Bo, literally saved me! They taught me with patience and were honest with me about what I had to do to reach my goals. I could not have reached this point without them.
What are your hobbies/What do you like to do for fun outside of the classroom?
I enjoy cooking, traveling, and spending time in nature. I also enjoy a lot of the arts and crafts like painting and drawing. I love spending time with friends and family and being a part of my cultural and religious communities!
Are there any tips/advice you would like to share with current pre-health students?
One tip would be to really reflect on your personal journey to medicine, as medical schools just want to know the real you! Also, don’t compare your journey to others. I still can’t believe I’m a medical student, after praying and working hard for YEARS! It doesn’t matter how slow you go, just don’t stop!
