What school are you attending and what you are studying? Why did you choose to apply to this school? What do you think makes your school unique?
I am currently a MD candidate at Nova Southeastern University College of Allopathic Medicine. I think NSU MD, being a newer program, was enticing in the fact there are a lot more opportunities for student impact than at other established schools. Additionally, I was looking for a school where I wouldn’t be just another number, and NSU MD having 50 students per class allows for faculty and peers to really know each other.
Is there a specialization and/or specific population you are interested in? Why? How did you get into it and/or learn more about it?
I am interested in internal medicine due to its case diversity and future career path flexibility (ie: fellowships in GI, Cardio, Allergy, etc.). I also knew that I 100% did not want to go into anything surgical.
What are one or two of your favorite experiences/activities and why?
In college and currently in medical school, my favorite activities has always been intramural sports. It’s just a great outlet from pre-med and medicine and also a way to keep exercising!
Did you take any gap years?
Yes, I took 2 gap years. I worked as in research at BUSM and as a MCAT tutor.
What was your favorite BU course and why?
My favorite class was Stem Cells, taught by Dr. Horacio Friedman. The class was not only interesting in the material itself, but more importantly, taught me life-long skills in how to read and interpret scientific papers.
Were you involved in any clubs/groups at BU?
I was a part of Global Medical Brigades for most of college. During freshman year, I travelled to Honduras with the May 2016 brigade, and volunteered in a 3 day triage set-up.
Have you always known you wanted to be a doctor? What/who has been your biggest inspiration?
I knew I wanted to do something health-related since my high school biology class. It wasn’t until I learned more about the role and the impact physicians had from my shadowing experiences that I knew I wanted to become a physician. My biggest inspiration was a family friend who originally was a international physician and had to redo his entire medical training (Step 1/2/3, residency match etc.) in the United States. It helped put a daunting process into perspective, that if he could preservere despite the greatest odds, that I could too.
What resources at BU did you find most helpful that others might not know about?
Some of the best resources were my professors. Most students talk to professors about the course material, however the professors also are great for research connections, and you will 100% wish you got to know them well when you’re looking for people to write your recommendation letters later on.
What are your hobbies/What do you like to do for fun outside of the classroom?
Some hobbies I enjoy include all things soccer (playing, coaching, watching etc.).
Are there any tips/advice you would like to share with current pre-health students?
This is going to sound cliche, but really just be yourself and enjoy the process. It’s important to get the pre-requisites like clinical hours, non-clinical hours etc., but it’s also just as important to BE YOU (BU, get it haha.) and enjoy your time. You’re only in college once, you’re only in your twenties once and medical school will take away a huge part of your prime years. So it’s important to take time, enjoy yourself, and do what you want to do, not what you think medical schools want.
