Two New Publications: On Climate Change and on Governance for a Green Economy

Rio20TFC Mar2011cover20-IIB-coverThe Boston University Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future published two new papers: the first is an issue brief (No. 20) on the role of art and the media in perceptions on climate change (see here); and the second is a Task Force Report on governance for a green economy (see here).

Pardee Center Issues in Brief No. 020 is written by Dr. Miquel Munoz, Pardee Post-doctoral Fellow and Bernd Sommer, who was a Visiting Scholar at the Pardee Center in 2010. Based largely on discussions that occurred at an October 2010 symposium held at Boston University titled Transatlantic Perceptions of Climate Change: The Role of the Arts and Media, this paper explores the role that the media and the arts play in shaping whether and how people view climate change as an issue of concern for society. The Issues in Brief series publishes original commentary based on research related to issues of policy significance, including topics discussed at Pardee Center conferences and workshops.

The report, Beyond Rio + 20: Governance for a Green Economy, is the product of the Pardee Center Task Force on the Green Economy, which met at the Pardee House in September 2010.   As an intellectual contribution to the preparations for the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, a.k.a. Rio +20), the Pardee Center convened a small task force of experts to discuss the role of institutions in the actualization of a green economy in the context of sustainable development. A stellar group of experts from academia, government and civil society were asked to outline ideas about what the world has learned about institutions for sustainable development from the past, and what we can propose about the governance challenges and opportunities for the continuous development of a green economy in the future. The Task Force members were charged specifically not to come to consensus about specific recommendations, but rather to present a variety and diversity of views. This report presents their thoughts and ideas. (Download full report here).

The Pardee Center Task Force Reports present the findings of these deliberations as a contribution of expert knowledge to discussions about important issues for which decisions made today will influence longer-range human development.
