What is a call number?

BU Libraries arranges collections first by library location, then by call number. Call numbers are located on the spines of books and other materials. You can also find call numbers in BU Libraries Search, under the “Find in Library” heading of an item record.

A call number is a sequence of letters and numbers that show a book’s location within the library. A Library of Congress call number is a combination of letters and numbers looking something like this: BF76.7 .P83 2020

Parts of the Call Number: BF76.7 .P83 2020

BF76.7 – the subject area where the book is located

.P83 – additional information about the book, sometimes more than one line

2020 – year of publication

Library of Congress: “What is a call number and how do I use it?”
