Student Employee Opportunities
Help keep the BU Libraries running while gaining meaningful hands-on experiences that prepare you for your future careers.
We hire all year round, and our busiest hiring periods are: August – September, January – February, and April – May as we prepare for upcoming semesters.
Apply for jobs through the JobX Job Board.
Prepare for Hiring Paperwork
All students hired will need to complete the federally required I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form. To prepare for this, we recommend that prospective student employees bring original, unexpired copies of their acceptable I-9 documents to campus.
Students who have already worked at BU and been paid by BU do not need to complete the I-9 again.
Types of Positions
Customer Service
Serve the BU community by providing excellent customer service at service desk at one of our library branches. These positions focus on communicating with library users and assisting them with accessing library services.
Materials Processing and Administration
There is a lot going on behind the scenes at the BU Libraries. From helping in Interlibrary Loan or shelving returned books to sorting and delivering mail or processing archival materials, these position provide crucial support library collections and other daily operations.
Library Experience and Communications
Connect with fellow students and promote library services. Students assisting our library experience and communications departments represent the library at campus events, lead graphic design projects, and create social media content.
Special Projects
Special project positions support small teams with big visions. These teams might not hire as often, but when they do, student positions play a critical role. Jobs may include processing materials in specialized languages, working with data, gathering UX feedback, and more. These positions tend to require previous experience or a specialized skillset.
What to Expect
Visit the Student Employment Office website for current hourly rates in all job grades.
Most positions at the BU Libraries offer approximately 5 hours of work per week during the academic year and 15 hours per week over the summer semesters, depending on need, availability, and work study award size. Student employees may be eligible for supplemental funding to support additional hours.
Work schedules are generally set at the start of each new semester and renewed when semesters and class schedules change. Reliable attendance is expected for any student position at the BU Libraries. Needed changes to a work schedule should be discussed with a supervisor for prior approval.
