Boston University Launches New Summer Training Program for International Lawyers

BU Law and CELOP Team Up to Prepare Practitioners for Global Work.

BU Law complexBoston University is pleased to announce the launch of US Business Law for the International Lawyer, a three-week professional training program designed to give lawyers educated outside the US the foundational knowledge and practical skills they need to effectively represent clients in corporate transactions and commercial law matters.

Jointly developed by the BU School of Law and the Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP), the program is open to non-US trained lawyers with a minimum of three years of work experience. It will run from July 26 to August 16.

“This is the kind of program where participants can immediately use the skills and knowledge they gain the moment they return to their offices,” says John N. Riccardi, BU Law’s assistant dean for graduate and international programs. “Students will obtain a practical understanding of how US business lawyers represent their clients’ interests, which will directly enhance their careers in today’s highly competitive legal service market.”

Through hands-on, interactive instruction and exercises led by members of CELOP’s full-time faculty and prominent, experienced practitioners from Boston’s legal community, students will learn the core aspects of business law, including entity formation, contract drafting and negotiation, intellectual property protection and dispute resolution. They will gain exposure to common law reasoning and case law methodology and discover new ways to address their clients’ legal and business issues. Students will also become familiar with US legal discourse, terminology and vocabulary—and will develop their skills at communicating legal concepts in written and spoken English.

“The program will integrate Legal English instruction with doctrinal teaching, but will do so in an interactive format, allowing students to develop their skills in real time,” says Assistant Dean Riccardi. “That’s what makes this program ideal for working practitioners.”

About CELOP and Boston University School of Law’s Legal English Collaborations

For over 20 years, CELOP and BU Law have prepared hundreds of internationally trained law students and practitioners for success in US LLM programs and their careers through its six-week summer Legal English & Foundations of the US Legal System Program (formerly known as the Pre-LLM Legal English Program). The Foundations program is open to students who plan to begin LLM studies at a US law school in the fall semester as well as to students who have completed at least three years of full-time law studies outside the US.

“US Business Law for the International Lawyer builds on our decades of experience training foreign-educated lawyers, both at CELOP and through our LLM in American Law and LLM in Banking and Financial Law Programs,” notes Riccardi.

More information about US Business Law for the International Lawyer is available on CELOP’s website. Inquiries may also be directed to CELOP@bu.edu.
