BU Law Launches Online Certificate in Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance

Demand for regulatory compliance experts spurs creation of online certificate program.

Boston University School of Law is proud to announce the launch of its Certificate in Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance, beginning in the Fall 2016 semester. The certificate is designed to give working professionals an in-depth understanding of risk management and compliance and equip them with the practical skills to create, execute, and implement international transactions and corporate governance practices in today’s increasingly regulated markets. Developed in conjunction with Boston University’s Metropolitan College Risk Management programs, the 12-credit certificate is the first of its kind to be offered by a law school ranked in the top 50 by US News & World Report.

“The certificate represents the perfect marriage between the School of Law and Metropolitan College’s subject matter expertise, and meets a market need in this fast-growing and dynamic field that has become of increasing relevance to practitioners in every jurisdiction,” says Ian C. Pilarczyk, director of BU Law’s Executive LLM in International Business Law program. “The courses provide real-world, practical knowledge delivered in a format that enhances students’ ability to incorporate study into their professional lives, while also providing a valued professional credential that may enhance their professional standing.”

The certificate program gives students considerable flexibility to pursue compliance studies that match their interests. Current offerings include: Enterprise Risk Management; Enterprise Risk Planning and Compliance; Enterprise Risk Analytics; Global Compliance: Introduction and Best Practices; Global Cyberlaw and Governance; and a Directed Study in Compliance. All courses are available in an asynchronous online format, making them ideal for working professionals. Students must complete a minimum of four 3-credit classes, taken in any order, to receive the certificate.

“We have launched this certificate to address the challenges enterprises face in understanding the rules that govern their activities, as well as the risks they assume if they are not on top of regulatory requirements,” says John Riccardi, assistant dean for graduate and international programs. “We expect the demand for expertise in compliance will only continue to grow.”

BU Law’s Certificate in Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance is the most recent example of the school’s focus on preparing professionals for global work. In 2015, the school became the nation’s first law school to offer a MOOC in the fast-growing field of compliance. The MOOC, Legal Risk Management Strategies for Multinational Enterprises, is available on the edX online learning platform. Available for CLE credit in most states, the course examines the concept of corporate accountability as it applies to businesses whose operations transcend borders. In addition, BU Law’s Executive LLM Program in International Business Law, offered through a first-of-its-kind blended-learning platform, gives lawyers fundamental background in the key areas of international corporate transactions, as taught from the US perspective. To meet the demand for shorter, non-degree business law training programs, the school also offers a 12-credit Certificate in International Business Law.

Students who complete the Certificate in Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance are eligible to apply to BU Law’s Executive LLM in International Business Law on an advanced standing basis, applying their certificate credits towards the Executive LLM program’s 20-credit requirement.
