Topics in the Application of AI to the Law

AI has come to the practice of law, raising many issues and implications that are essential to understand. This two-credit elective examines what AI is and how it works, and how emerging AI technologies intersect with civil, criminal, administrative, and constitutional law. The course will explore topics such as liability for autonomous systems; algorithmic decision making in government and private markets; proof, causation, and evidence; personhood; bias and profiling; authorship and IP; morality and professional responsibility; and ultimately how AI is and should be regulated through litigation, legislation, and agency action. While we discuss how AI works, algorithms, and related matters, no technical background is required. There will be a final exam.
