Program Extension

Your initial BU immigration document reflects the anticipated dates of your program. This is an estimated date based on academic program. If you complete your program earlier, this date is shortened. If you need extra time to complete your studies, the ISSO can advise you on your options and required paperwork.

Program Completion Dates:

• F-1 students: The expected program completion date is in item #5 of your I-20, after “and complete studies no later than.”
• J-1 students: The expected program end date is in Section 3 of your DS-2019, showing the start and end dates of your exchange program.

Your U.S. entry visa will show “D/S” (duration of status), reflecting program limits set by BU dates. Monitor the program end date on your immigration document and in the ISSOPortal.

Note: Failure to extend your status before the program end date is a violation of your immigration status.

Steps to Request a Program Extension

1. Obtain academic approval from your department to continue enrollment by working with your academic department to understand your estimated completion date. You will list the academic department contact as the “Academic Approver” of your request in the ISSOPortal.

2. Prepare required documentation to apply in the ISSOPortal:

   • Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition, fees, and living expenses for the requested extension period or one academic year (whichever is shorter).
     • If self-funded, submit a bank letter or statement verifying funds.
     • If sponsored (e.g., by parents), submit sponsor’s bank documents plus a Sponsorship Certification Form or letter confirming financial support.
     • All financial documents must be originals, signed, dated, in English, and show amounts in U.S. dollars.

3. For second or subsequent extension requests, include a letter from your department chair explaining the compelling academic reasons for the delay and how you are making normal progress toward degree completion.

4. Log into the ISSOPortal to request an I-20 or DS-2019 Program Extension.

Important: Initiate your extension request at least one month before your current program end date. Extensions cannot be granted after expiration. If you miss the deadline, you will forfeit your F-1 status.

Your ISSO advisor will review your application and determine your eligibility. If approved*, new immigration documents will be issued for you and any F-2/J-2 dependents.

*Note: Extension requests based solely on academic probation or suspension are not accepted reasons for extension.
