The ISSO Scholar Services team is available for both in-person and virtual appointments. Please review the options below to schedule a meeting or to request a particular service or assistance.

These appointments and services are intended for faculty, researchers, employees, and associated department administrators and NOT for current Boston University students.

New J-1 Exchange Visitor Orientation and Check-in

New BU sponsored J-1 Exchange Visitors are required to attend orientation as part of their ISSO Clearance and check-in process. New J-1 Scholars receiving a BU salary will also need to schedule a New Employee I-9/15-minute advising appointment to complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification in-person.

In-Person appointments for new and continuing scholars as well as department administrators are available for certain services:

I-9 employment eligibility verification*,  J-1 DS-2019 travel signature request, and other questions pertaining to travel, visa, employment, and immigration processing

*Appointments are for BU employees only. BU students who will be working on campus via the Student Employment Office can review the options for completing I-9 employment verification.

New H‑1B Orientation and Overview

In-person appointments for new employees in the H-1B as well as for continuing employees who have been approved for a change of status from another immigration classification to H-1B are available. New H-1B employees will complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification during this time and do not need to schedule a separate in-person I-9 appointment.

Check-in and Clearance for (non‑J‑1) Visiting Students, Visiting Researchers or other affiliates

Advising Appointment

International scholars. employees and department administrators can request a remote appointment to discuss all matters pertaining to travel, visa, employment, and immigration processing.

Document Drop-off or Pick-up at ISSO Front Desk

Scholars, employees and department administrators who have either received confirmation from ISSO Scholar Services that a document is available for pick-up or have paperwork to drop-off for a member of the Scholar Services team can do so during normal business hours. If you have questions or prefer to drop-off or pick-up with a Scholar Services team member, please schedule a 15-minute (in-person) advising appointment instead.
