BU Sponsorship for Employment-Based U.S. Permanent Residence (Green Card)
When an employer agrees to sponsor a foreign national employee for an application for U.S. permanent residence, the employer is responsible for submitting the application on behalf of the employee to several different federal agencies. Because the process requires a substantial commitment of University resources, the requesting department needs to verify that there is a compelling institutional need and reasonable expectation of continued employment. For these reasons, BU maintains a strict approval process.
BU Guidelines and Procedures for Sponsoring Foreign Nationals for Permanent Residence
ISSO is not involved in requesting or managing the permanent residence application itself, but continues to support your nonimmigrant status.
Because green card applications can take several years, you must keep ISSO informed of any updates. Your department and ISSO will continue to manage any needed nonimmigrant sponsorship (e.g., extensions) so you can remain employed at BU until permanent residence is approved. ISSO may also consult with outside counsel as needed.
