Preparing for Your Departure
Use these tips and timelines to plan your graduation and departure from Boston University effectively.
Beginning of your Final Term:
- Meet your academic advisor to confirm you’re on track to graduate.
- Apply to graduate in MyBUStudent.
- Attend an OPT or AT workshop if you want to learn more about work experience in the U.S. after graduation (F-1 students on OPT; J-1 students on Academic Training).
- Consult your ISSO advisor if you plan to transfer to another U.S. school.
2–3 Months Before Graduation:
- For visitors attending Commencement, arrange accommodations and remind them to apply for tourist visas if needed. You can request an invitation letter for their visa application. Plan to make dinner reservations well in advance as well.
- If you haven’t done so already, begin your job search and explore resources at BU’s Center for Career Development.
Before You Leave BU:Personal Checklist:
- Notify your landlord/housing office (usually 30 days’ written notice-check your lease).
- Inform your roommates of your plans.
- Cancel utility accounts and subscriptions.
- Arrange to close your bank accounts.
- Decide what to do with your vehicle, if applicable.
- Contact health, car, and life insurance providers about coverage or cancellations.
- Leave a forwarding address with the post office.
- Pay any outstanding fines (library, parking, etc.).
- Get quotes from shipping or storage companies for your belongings.
- Sell or donate furniture, appliances, electronics, vehicles, and bikes via online sites, thrift stores or local charities.
- Unsubscribe from unnecessary email lists.
