BU typically hosts scholars and employees in four categories to support academic research, teaching and other employment. Find your category below to start making your connections to the university. Once you have an affiliation established, your host department will work with the ISSO regarding possible immigration sponsorship and clearance to begin your activity at BU.
Research
Academic research positions at BU include a range of options from paid postdoctoral associates to uncompensated visiting researcher appointments. These appointments are always under the direct supervision of one of BU’s outstanding faculty. Academic research positions are reviewed and conferred directly by the school or college. If you are interested in working with a BU faculty, we recommend you:
- Check BU’s Research website to find departments or disciplines that match your interests.
- Contact faculty with similar research interests to inquire about opportunities.
Most research positions will qualify for immigration sponsorship.
Faculty
Faculty positions are advertised in professional publications and field-specific job boards. BU follows a formal nomination and academic approval process. Most faculty appointments will qualify for immigration sponsorship.
Staff
Staff positions include all roles not classified as academic research or faculty. Open positions are posted through BU Human Resources. Immigration sponsorship for staff positions depends on the details of the job and requires Provost approval. Most staff positions require a graduate degree to qualify. If you will require immigration sponsorship, we recommend you inform the HR talent & recruitment specialist as part of the initial screening process.
Casual/Temporary Positions
On occasion, departments will hire temporary staff to fill a short-term need (up to 9 months). Typically, temporary positions do not qualify for immigration sponsorship. However, individuals with employment authorization may still be eligible to work in a short-term capacity.
Once your affiliation is established, the next steps will vary depending on whether you are already in the U.S. and whether you require immigration sponsorship to engage in the BU employment/activity. For example, if you outside the U.S., your host department will need to work with the ISSO to obtain immigration sponsorship. If you are in the U.S., your host department will work with the ISSO to develop an immigration strategy that will support your employment/activity.
Plan in advance as immigration strategies are complex, time consuming and will vary depending on your particular immigration and employment situation.
