Earn Hub Units While Studying Abroad

Did you know that students can earn Hub units while studying abroad? In fact, a number of courses within BU’s many study abroad programs carry Hub units. For students choosing to study abroad in one of these programs, it can be helpful to consult with an academic advisor and with a study abroad advisor in determining how one can earn Hub units while away. For more information about specific BU Study Abroad programs, please visit the BU Study Abroad website. Courses offered in study abroad programs that are not affiliated with BU will not fulfill Hub requirements.

Cross-list your project-based course as a BU Hub Cross-College Challenge!

March 21, 2019:

The Cross-College Challenge (XCC) is currently in its inaugural year with the first cohort having run in Fall 2018 and second cohort in progress in Spring 2019. XCC is currently seeking existing BU courses to cross-list as HUB XC “###” in 2019-2020. Faculty from all disciplines, including the Charles River, Medical, and Fenway campuses, are encouraged to teach the XCC, modeling interdisciplinary collaboration within their sections.

During the pilots, faculty will have a great deal of flexibility incorporating learning outcomes for the 4 Hub areas into their syllabi and deciding how to use class time (lecture vs. project work), as well as the opportunity to develop their own tools and techniques. In Fall 2018 CFA FA 560 piloted a with the XCC syllabus and was able to extend an already rich experience to a broader group of students.

In order to cross-list your course as an XCC it should:

  • Be co-taught, ideally by faculty from different disciplines
  • Be open to all undergraduate juniors and seniors, regardless of major
  • Center around a real-world project with an external organization
  • Incorporate the following 4 Hub areas into the syllabus:
    • Creativity/Innovation
    • Oral and/or Signed Communication
    • Research and Information Literacy
    • Teamwork/Collaboration
  • Present at a Project Showcase at the end of the semester along with all sections of XCC
