Specialty Courses

Hub specialty courses (with prefix “HUB”) encourage exploration, introduce students to engaging topics, and allow students to connect with faculty, staff, and students across the University while fulfilling Hub requirements. Click through the pages in this section to learn more.

HUB CC (Cocurriculars)

  • 3 hours of activity, discussion, and reflection per week
  • 0-unit, ungraded
  • Fulfill 1 Hub area (including IIC, GCI, TWC, CRI, WIN and more)
  • Open to first-year students, sophomores, junior, and seniors

HUB IC (Interdisciplinary Courses)

  • Introduce exciting topics from a multidisciplinary perspective
  • 4-unit courses, A-F grading
  • Fulfill 2-3 Hub areas (less common combinations from disparate fields)
  • Open to first-year students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors

HUB XC (Cross-College Challenge)

  • Team and project-based to address a substantial challenge impacting BU and the City of Boston
  • 4 unit course, A-F grading
  • Fulfills 4 Hub areas (CRI, RIL, TWC + 1 Communication area)
  • Sophomore standing or above

HUB RL

  • Co-requisite with an Honors Thesis or a Directed Study course you are taking
  • 0-unit course
  • Fulfills 1 Hub requirement in RIL
  • Requires a written reflection due at the end of the semester

HUB SA

  • Available to BU undergraduate students studying abroad
  • 0-unit course
  • Fulfills 1 Hub requirement in GCI or IIC
  • Requires a written reflection due at the end of the semester
