Hub and Your Career

BU’s General Education

The BU Hub helps you build and strengthen the mindset and skills that prepare you for your future, no matter your major or career path.

Instead of a specific checklist of required classes, the Hub emphasizes building skills that help you adapt, lead, and make an impact in any field.

You’ll grow your ability to:

  • Communicate clearly
  • Solve problems creatively
  • Work on diverse teams
  • Think critically and ethically
    …and more.

Skills Employers Want

Employers consistently look for eight key skill areas (also called competencies) when hiring. These career ready competencies are recognized by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and form the foundation for success in any field. Hub courses are intentionally designed to help you gain real experience in each of these areas and stand out as being career-ready.

Connect Your Hub Experience to Your Professional Life

As you take your Hub courses, think about how each experience builds skills you can use in your career. For example:

Creativity & Innovation helps you…

  • Come up with, test, and pursue original solutions to real-world problems.

Critical Thinking helps you…

  • Evaluate evidence and question assumptions before forming conclusions.

Teamwork & Collaboration helps you…

  • Work effectively with diverse groups and keep projects moving toward results.

Ethical Reasoning helps you…

  • Identify, grapple with, and make ethical decisions.

By the time you finish your Hub requirements, you’ll have a strong foundation of skills that employers expect, and that you can confidently put into action in your career.

(Bonus: In the cocurricular, HUB CC 299: WIN in Your Career, juniors and seniors reflect on how the knowledge they’ve gained in the Hub can be applied to their career aspirations and even create an ePortfolio to support professional development. This is a great way to connect your Hub learning to your future).
