Information for Students

This is an overview of services available to undergraduate students.  The Geddes Center is located on the fifth floor of CAS, accessible only via the TSAI Center elevators.  Our hours are listed at the bottom of this page.  Most activities take place in CAS537 or nearby adjacent rooms.  We welcome all students, you don’t need to be enrolled in a language course.

Film Viewing

Films are available on a first come, first serve basis.  Advance reservations are not needed as there are generally multiple copies of films available.  Films can be viewed individually or in small groups.  Viewing rooms may be used for groups of three or more when available.  Films must be part of the Geddes collection or put on reserve at Geddes by the Krasker Film Library at Mugar; we cannot screen films that the university does not own.  We can screen streaming films from Kanopy, Swank, and Alexander Street (and others), however due to licensing restrictions we cannot stream from Netflix or other commercial streaming platforms.  Our catalog of holdings is available at http://glc.bu.edu/.

Lab

There are 20 Windows computers and 4 iMacs available in CAS537 with Adobe Creative Cloud.  Printing is available using the MyPrint printer in the lab.  At times classes may be using the computer lab for exams or other projects.  During these times, any available computers may be used, however please be respectful of the class taking place and keep any noise level to a minimum.

Video carrels are available for students wishing to view Geddes films individually or in pairs.

There are various study carrels, collaboration tables, white/glass boards available in the lab on a first come first serve basis.

Poppin’ Pod

The Poppin Pod may be used for Podcasting assignments, or just as a quiet space for activities such as Zoom calls.  Reservations for the Pod may be made in advance using the form located here.

The Pod contains a Zoom Podtrak P2 digital recorder as well as headsets and microphones for recording.  Recordings are made using the recorder via an SD card, which then can be transferred to a personal laptop or to cloud services using the lab computers.  View the P2 recorder quickstart guide here (PDF).

Podcasting Assignments

For individual assignments, please make use of the Poppin’ Pod.  For larger class projects, your instructor may require the use of the Geddes Audio Studio.  Your instructor will provide you with a link to an online signup sheet to have an audio engineer assist with your recordings.  We do not currently accept drop-ins for this space

Audio and Video Recording Equipment

Cinema and Media Studies students may borrow CIMS film equipment as described by the course syllabus.  We do not loan equipment directly to students without an associated class project.  if you wish to borrow equipment as part of a class project, please ask your instructor to make arrangements directly with the Center.

Classrooms and other Meeting Rooms

Student groups registered with the Student Activities Office may reserve Geddes classrooms using 25Live, the university’s online events booking system.  For spaces not listed in 25Live, please contact geddes@bu.edu.  Availability can be viewed here.

Lounge

The lounge hosts a TEEM collaboration table with a monitor for group collaboration.  Additionally, there are tables and chairs for individual and group study.
