Yingqiu Kuang

Yingqiu Kuang serves as a Data Analyst and Team Lead for the Data Analysis for Transparency and Accountability (D.A.T.A.) group at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center. She leads data management for the Center’s public databases tracking Chinese overseas lending and development finance, foreign direct investment, and energy finance, and designs empirical analyses of China’s overseas economic activity. Her work helps translate complex financial and investment flows into accessible and actionable resources for researchers, policymakers, journalists, and the public.

Having completed a Shorenstein postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford and a Max Weber fellowship at the European University Institute, she is also pursuing an extensive research agenda on technology, law, and global governance in East Asia and beyond. Her current book project explains why East Asian firms appear more effective in 5G rulemaking on transnational platforms than traditional technology giants, and how the diverse behavior of these firms is reshaping global institutions.

Yingqiu completed her PhD in Political Science at the University of British Columbia and also holds master’s degrees in political science from UBC. She developed her interest in East Asian politics and economy as an undergraduate at Peking University and Waseda University. As a policy specialist, she has worked with the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, the National Energy Board of Canada, and others.
