Chinese Loans to Africa Database – Data Update
- Starts10:30 am on Thursday, September 21, 2023

Over the past 22 years, Chinese development finance institutions, commercial banks, government entities, companies and other financiers have provided an estimated 1,243 loans amounting to $170.08 billion to 49 African governments and seven regional institutions. These loans have financed considerable infrastructure, energy and development projects throughout Africa.
Since 2016, annual financing has been steadily declining, from a peak of $28.45 billion to $994.48 million in 2022. Chinese loans to Africa appear to have entered a new state of lending, wherein smaller scale, targeted projects have replaced the mega infrastructure projects typical of previous years.
What trends are characterizing Chinese loans to Africa in the post-pandemic era? Which countries and sectors have received financing in recent years? And what factors are likely to shape Chinese lending to Africa in the years to come?
A new update to the Chinese Loans to Africa Database, managed by the Boston University Global Development Policy Center, provides insights and analysis on the state of Chinese lending to Africa in the post-pandemic era.
