Summer 2025 News and Notes
There is a lot going on at FitRec this summer. Please take a minute to read the news and notes below to stay informed. For questions regarding any topic on this page, please feel free to reach out to us at fitrec@bu.edu.
Scheduled Membership Rate Change
starting July 1, 2025, there will be an adjustment to our monthly, 6-month, and Annual membership rates. New rates can be found listed on our Membership webpages (Fac/Staff, Alumni, Friends Of BU). Our last rate adjustment occurred in July, 2022, and since then we’ve worked hard to keep costs as stable as possible. This change is necessary to ensure that we can continue to provide you with a top-quality facility, equipment, classes, and services while maintaining the high standards you’ve come to expect.
Turnstile Replacement Project
During the first two weeks of June, FitRec will be conducting a full replacement of our entry turnstiles. While the installation and testing is taking place, you will notice a new traffic pattern after entering the FitRec front doors. Those who are able to use stairs will be directed around the left side of the front desk and up a stairway to level 2. Those who are unable to use stairs can check in at our front desk and be escorted around the construction area by a member of our staff.
Update: Turnstile installation is now complete. All 6-Month Recurring and Annual Recurring members, as well as Monthly members who held active membership in May and renewed into June, can pick up their complimentary new FitRec ID at the front desk.
New FitRec IDs
We’re excited that our new turnstiles will have the functionality to enable our members to simply tap their card upon entry rather than the current swipe system. This enhanced functionality will require new physical FitRec ID cards for certain member types. Please consult your membership type below to learn more. After reading this section, please proceed to the section about New ID Pick Up Process.
Students: Student primary members are expected to utilize their Terrier Card (BUID) to enter FitRec. We do not print FitRec IDs for primary student members. Spouse members and dependent members age 16 or older who are members during the month of May 2025 and who renew into June will receive a complimentary new ID. Spouses and dependents 16+ who join FitRec on or after June 1, 2025, will need to purchase a FitRec ID.
Faculty/Staff: Faculty/Staff primary members who work in full-time benefited positions can use their Terrier Card (BUID) to enter FitRec. If your Terrier Card is an older/incompatible variety such that it will not work with our new turnstiles, you are entitled to one complimentary FitRec ID. Fac/Staff who are members in May 2025 will be able to receive a complimentary FitRec ID by exchanging their old FitRec ID at the FitRec front desk. Fac/Staff members who join on or after June 1, 2025 and who no longer have their BUID will need to purchase a FitRec ID.
Other groups who are eligible for faculty/staff level membership including but not limited to; Visiting Scholars, BMC, Aramark, etc. will usually need to purchase a FitRec ID. A good rule of thumb is, if you need to manually create an account in our system as opposed to logging in using your Kerberos, you will need to purchase a FitRec ID.
Faculty/Staff spouse members and dependent members age 16 or older who are currently on an active 6-month or Annual membership plan during the month of May 2025 will receive a complimentary new ID. Monthly members active in May and who renew into June will also receive a complimentary ID. Spouses and dependents 16+ who join FitRec on or after June 1, 2025, will need to purchase a FitRec ID.
Alumni (including Young Alumni): Primary alumni members who still have their Terrier Card (BUID) will be able to use this ID to tap into FitRec. If your BUID is an older/incompatible variety such that it will not work with our new turnstiles, you are entitled to one complimentary FitRec ID. Alumni who are members in May 2025 will be able to receive a complimentary FitRec ID by exchanging their old FitRec ID at the FitRec front desk. Alumni members who join on or after June 1, 2025 and who no longer have their BUID will need to purchase a FitRec ID.
Alumni spouse members and dependent members age 16 or older who are currently on an active 6-month or annual membership plan during the month of May 2025 will receive a complimentary new ID. Monthly members who were active in May of 2025 and renew into June will receive a complimentary ID. Spouses and dependents 16+ who join FitRec on or after June 1, 2025, will need to purchase a FitRec ID.
Friends of BU: All Friends of BU primary, spouse, and dependent members age 16 or older are required to have a FitRec ID. People who are members in May 2025 will be able to receive a complimentary ID by exchanging their old ID at the FitRec front desk. Members who join after June 1, 2025 will need to purchase a FitRec ID.
Primary, spouse, and dependent members age 16 or older who are currently on an active 6-month or annual membership plan during the month of May 2025 will receive a complimentary new ID. Monthly members who were active in May 2025 and renew into June will receive a complimentary ID. Spouses and dependents 16+ who join FitRec on or after June 1, 2025, will need to purchase a FitRec ID.
Summer Guests: Summer guests purchasing a pass for 5 weeks or more will be granted a FitRec ID. Summer guests purchasing passes from 1-4 weeks in length will have the option to purchase a FitRec ID. Those opting to not purchase a FitRec ID will check in at the front desk at each visit. Please be sure to have a photo ID showing date of birth at each visit.
New FitRec ID Pick Up Process
Update: All 6-Month Recurring and Annual Recurring members, as well as Monthly members who held active membership in May and renewed into June, can pick up their complimentary new FitRec ID at the front desk.
Members will use their existing FitRec ID’s to swipe in through the end of the turnstile replacement project at the side table near our temporary entrance. Once we gain the ability to begin printing our new IDs, we will do our best to pre-print as many of the new IDs as possible and members will be advised when they can swap out their old ID for their new ID. Please keep your eye out for signage in our lobby during this time and check back to this page for more updates.
New 6-Month and Annual Recurring members whose membership starts on July 1 can request to have their ID printed at their first visit.
FitRec ID policy (non-students)
All monthly/6-month/annual members are expected to access the building using either their BUID or FitRec ID.
FitRec may restrict access for any non-student member who fails to regularly arrive with their FitRec or BUID. Consecutive visits where a member does not bring their ID may lead to access restriction until either the member brings their FitRec/BU ID or a new ID is purchased (if eligible).
Sharing of a FitRec or BUID is an access violation. First violation is a $50 fine and 1-week suspension. Further violations are outlined in our membership handbook.
FitPass Evolution
To better align with our diverse array of class offerings and our evolving user base, the FitPass program will be rebranding to the name “Drop-in Classes“. These Drop-In classes will function in a similar fashion to FitPass in that they will be non-progressive and included in 6-Month and Annual memberships. Full-time students will also be able to sign in to these classes.
Our plan is to over time be able to add classes that are not strictly “fitness” based (hence the name change) to allow for a wider array of activities for our users. These drop-in classes will take place only during the Fall and Spring semesters, and users will be able to sign up for them 1 day ahead of time as opposed to the usual 2-hour window used for FitPass classes.
