Note Regarding Use of Nickerson Field

The following was sent to students in the West Campus community Saturday, August 29, 2020. However, it does provide important notes for all students who may consider using Nickerson Field for recreational or social activity.

We offer a warm welcome to you to fall semester at BU. As you meet students and spend time together on campus, we write with a few points to keep in mind about use of Nickerson Field and the open spaces around Nickerson, namely the West Campus plaza, including the open space between BUPD and Claflin Hall, and the location above the field known as “the grotto.” To date, we have observed a number of groups of students gathered in these areas enjoying the sunny weather.

While we all feel the energy associated with a residential campus experience, we ask that you adhere to safe practices when using these spaces. Nickerson Field is central to our community—and is a true student resource. Although Nickerson Field will be closed during intercollegiate athletics practice time, as usual, and will be closed at night — our intent is to keep it open for student use as much as possible. But, we need you to adhere to guidelines in place to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. Maintain physical distance and wear your mask!! If you see others who are not following these guidelines, feel free to remind them, “masks up.”

Let’s work together to ensure our facilities can remain open to students and, more importantly, to keep each other healthy.

Best wishes for a successful semester!
