All you need to know about Matriculation 2015

You’ve picked your side of the room, you’ve moved in your stuff, and you’ve made that jaunt to Target or Bed Bath & Beyond for those things you left with the family dog. What’s next?

How about walking down Comm Ave. with 3400 of your new friends?

That might sound daunting, but we swear it is not. You have to make it to your Matriculation ceremony at Agganis Arena on Sunday, August 30, 2015 somehow, and why not do so in grand style?

To join the Matriculation Walk on Sunday afternoon, pay attention to the directions of your RAs, material you may receive at move-in, and the timeline below. You’ll wait in the designated area, and when a band, Dean Elmore and a giant BU banner will come marching down the street, you join in the procession until it reaches Agganis Arena.

Here’s the timeline:

  • If you live in Myles Standish, Kilachand, Towers, 575 Comm Ave. or a Bay State Road Brownstone, be in your spot (outside your hall or, in the case of 575, at the corner of Silber Way and Bay State Road) at 12:45pm.
  • If you live in Warren Towers, wait for the walk in Marsh Plaza at 12:55pm.
  • If you live in South Campus or off-campus, wait in the George Sherman Union (GSU) plaza at 1pm.
  • If you live in West Campus, gather in the West Campus plaza at 1pm.

You get to march into Agganis Arena all together as the Class of 2019 – the only time you’ll march together as a class until your Commencement ceremony in 2019.

And this year, we’re making a collage of the class, so we’ll ask you to sign a postcard your RA will give you and bring it with you and drop it off when you arrive to the arena. The postcards will be on display in the GSU starting the first day of classes.

The Matriculation ceremony lasts 90 minutes, and afterwards, Student Activities has a big event ready for you on Nickerson Field (but we’ll let them talk about that.)

We’ve been doing the Matriculation Walk for almost ten years, and we want this one to be the best ever. Can’t wait for you to join in!

If you have questions, concerns or need accommodations to participate, give Kat in the Dean’s office a holler at 617-353-4126.

  1. Greetings! Do CGS January Boston-London students participate in this matriculation event, or would there be a smaller and similar event closer to when we start school? Thanks!

  2. Hi Justin –
If you are nearby on August 30th, you are more than welcome to participate in Matriculation. Just gather on the GSU Plaza at the time designated on the list above. Unfortunately, we can’t house any January program students specifically for the purpose of attending Matriculation. There are all many kinds of welcome events for the CGS January class when you get here as well.

  3. I recommend that if the parents are leaving after the ceremony that you say your goodbyes before your student begins the walk. Immediately after the ceremony the parents are directed to a parent reception and the students to their activity in a different area. It’s really not possible to meet immediately after the ceremony.

  4. The walk is a student event, so we recommend you leaving ahead of your student and making it to the arena before the walk gets there. That way you can see how neat it is when the walk enters the arena! There is a designated seating area for parents once you get to the arena, as the students are seated by school during Matriculation.

  5. Transfers can participate if they would like. You also have the transfer student reception on Sunday afternoon.

  6. Would it be possible to say goodbyes after the students procession but before students enter the Arena? Is there a landmark there where we could arrange to meet?

  7. 4pm on the 18th floor of 10 Buick Street. Make sure you bring your ID – you will need it to swipe into that building.

  8. It would be difficult to do so, because their procession is really part of the ceremony. We recommend saying your goodbyes before the procession begins.

  9. Are you a student or a family member? Parking is free during move-in in lots surrounding residence halls. If you need something during the school year, contact Parking Services (www.bu.edu/parking.)
