Travels with Terriers

We’re out and about celebrating new Terriers.  I, along with Terrier alumni, current students, and University staff, am making my way around to cities, neighborhoods, and communities to check-in with, kick it, and send off our new Terriers — parents and, of course, students.  Here’s a shoutout from Raul Fernandez, of the Howard Thurman Center, from the Houston Send Off:

Houston 2010

Our Houston Dispatch

Behind this door, on a quiet block in Houston’s Rice Village, a community of incoming Boston University students and parents gathered, equal parts excited and nervous about their first days as Terriers. Graciously hosted by Thea Fabio, Richard Merrill, and their daughter Maria Merrill (SHA ’10), the reception was an opportunity to connect — with Boston University, but also with one another. This welcoming home was abuzz with students trading info on class and room selection, many wondering aloud what their college roommate might be like. One student beamed about landing a job at the FitRec rock climbing wall, while another talked eagerly about joining BU’s tennis team. Meanwhile, their parents peppered John Battaglino and Raul Fernandez (me) from the Dean of Students Office with questions about move-in, Parents Weekend, and where to find the best Mexican food in Boston. (btw, it’s no Ninfa’s on Navigation, but Border Cafe in Cambridge is this writer’s pick!). Current student Jackie Byrd worked the room and offered her unique perspective on life at BU. Connect and engage was the advice of the day. When all was said and done, phone numbers were exchanged and some handshakes turned to hugs — because that’s what family does. Our wonderful hosts bid a fond farewell, knowing it wouldn’t be long until we gathered again behind other doors in Houston, and at their new second home, Boston University.

Steve, Julie, and Ali Lifton have got to be one of the funnest families I have met.  They opened their house to new Terriers and their families – it was a home full of joy, fun, and excitement about new possibilities.  In addition to loads of deserts – handmade by Julie – the Liftons also have a home full of one of my favorite things – love.  How hip was this gathering? A view of a scarlet sunset that few stop to witness; a student guest riding in on her motorcycle; and, a special guest appearance by Pat Chambers, BU’s men’s hoops coach.  You should have been here!

A fabulous time – kickin’ it with young folk – our new students – who value independent thinking, a counter-culture, politics, appreciate art and music, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. There was love in the house but our new Terriers were slinging a mess of natural, graceful cool.

As they say, “A great time was had by all.” Off to Morristown and Kansas City – maybe we’ll see you.

Peace.
