Student Spotlight: Two Boston University Students’ Research Victories Highlight Oral Cancer
The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) recently announced the 2023 winners of its Hatton Competition, crowning two Boston University students as first-place winners. Kisa Iqbal ENDO 25 and Emily Fisher CAMED 27 received first place in the junior and senior categories, respectively, at the 2023 IADR Hatton Competition, which was held in Bogota, Colombia, in June 2023. Earlier in the year, Iqbal and Fisher had secured second-place wins in the same categories at the 2023 American Association for Dental, Oral & Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) Hatton Competition in Portland, Oregon. More

GSDM Dean’s Advisory Board Member Joins Alumni Council
GSDM Dean’s Advisory Board member Dr. Mina Paul SPH 96 is expanding her involvement with Boston University with her latest role as a member of the Boston University Alumni Council (BUAC). Paul will attend her first official meeting of the BUAC in October 2023. Paul has had a wide range of experiences with BU – ranging from her own studies at SPH and Questrom School of Business to her daughter’s experience as a student at Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies – Paul said she has been impressed with how much value she has been able to contribute to the university as an alumna. She said she is eager to bring her perspectives to the BUAC to support BU and GSDM’s continued growth. More

New Microscope Gives Extra Boost to GSDM Predoctoral Urgent Care Department
The already-high standard of care in the GSDM predoctoral urgent care department is on the rise thanks to the installation of a microscope in May 2023. Dr. Ana Keohane DMD 16, director of predoctoral urgent care and clinical associate professor of the department of general dentistry, said adding a microscope to the urgent care department will give predoctoral students the opportunity to learn how to treat endodontic emergencies efficiently and effectively using the most up-to-date technology and procedures. Students in the Doctor of Dental Medicine Class of 2027 and the Doctor of Dental Medicine Advanced Standing Class of 2025 were formally welcomed to the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine during the Professional Ceremony on July 28 on Talbot Green. Research Spotlight: New Study Motivates Smoking Cessation via a Virtual Reality Headset during Dental Cleanings
GSDM Center for Behavioral Sciences Research Director Dr. Belinda Borrelli and her team are entering the fourth year of a five-year grant exploring whether a video shown through a virtual reality headset delivered while the patient is getting their teeth cleaned and paired with a customized text message program, are effective at encouraging smoking cessation. Currently, Borrelli’s team has recruited more than 288 patients in this randomized clinical trial in both the GSDM patient treatment center and at Tufts School of Dental Medicine. More
