Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s scholarship program exists to assist young musicians with experiencing the magic of Tanglewood. BUTI awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships each year, and individual awards range from $500 to the full cost of tuition. The scholarship application is found within the admissions application, and should be submitted as a part of the original admissions application. Students will be notified of scholarship awards with their admissions decision. Requesting a scholarship after admissions decisions have been released decreases the chances of an award being offered. Applying for a scholarship does not affect admissions decisions.

Need-Based Scholarships

Need-based scholarship is awarded taking into consideration a student’s financial need, as well as enrollment needs. Due to limited scholarship resources, not all students who demonstrate financial need will be awarded a need-based scholarship. Need-based scholarship awards are contingent upon verification of income as reported in this application by required submission of form 1040 of the most recently-completed tax summary. In addition to submitting financial income information, students are also encouraged to submit a personal statement that outlines any information they would like BUTI to consider during the scholarship decision-making process. BUTI considers each applicant’s full financial story paired with personal statements to determine need-based awards.

Merit Scholarships

Merit-based scholarship is awarded taking into consideration an applicant’s talent and abilities as demonstrated in the audition, as well as enrollment needs. We encourage students to apply for both need-based and merit scholarships, as scholarship awards often consist of both types of funding.

Non-resident international students may be liable for a 14% tax on scholarships offered through BUTI. If you have any questions about the scholarship application process, please contact us, and we will be happy to assist.

Scholarship Appeal

BUTI works hard to make attendance possible regardless of your personal or family financial circumstances. We make initial scholarship offers based on several factors, including your application and audition. However, we know that things change quickly and that additional support may be necessary. We encourage you to submit an appeal form through the link below to be considered for additional funds as they become available. These funds are not guaranteed, but we will do our best to give you the summer at BUTI that you’re dreaming of!

Additional Resources

In addition to applying for BUTI scholarship funding, we encourage applicants to look for other local, regional and national resources such as The Anthony Quinn Scholarship Program, which is an annual competition for high school students seeking funding to attend summer intensive arts programs.
