The BU College of Fine Arts Communications office is thrilled to announce open work-study positions to begin as soon as this month. We seek creative, driven, outgoing, and hard-working undergraduate students, who enjoy collaborative work, storytelling, and have an appreciation for the arts.
The Communications assistants will work closely with the CFA Communications team and have opportunities to collaborate with other Schools and Units within CFA such as Student Services, Alumni Relations and Development, BU Art Galleries, and others!
About the Open Positions
Job Description
- Take high-quality photography capturing the attendees, happenings, environments, and moments of CFA. Types of events photographers will be asked to cover include art exhibitions, music concerts, theatre productions, student social events, classrooms, masterclasses, and campus shots, among others.
- Lightly edit photography to adjust lighting, exposure, contrast, etc.
- Upload photography and submit photos in a timely manner to the CFA Communications team via a file hosting service like Dropbox or Google Drive.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- Have a sharp eye and creativity when it comes to capturing photography
- Photography experience is recommended. If you have photos or a portfolio, please send along!
- Proficient with Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed (some events are in the evening)
Job Description
- Support the CFA Communications team by researching and collecting information related to alums involved in notable theatrical productions and other large-scale art events.
- Conduct research on CFA rankings and inform the CFA Communications team of any new rankings in organizations and lists like U.S. News & World Report, Niche, The Hollywood Reporter, and Playbill, among others.
- Other tasks as assigned.

- A team player, detail-oriented, and excellent time management
- Proficient in using Google Docs and Sheets
- Interest in the arts – music, theatre, visual arts
Job Description
- Craft social media captions, following the tone and voice of the University, effectively taking a long-form piece of content, such as an article from BU Today, and converting it into posts for CFA’s Facebook, Instagram, and X.
- Assist CFA Communications with populating pre-existing templates for CFA’s social series, including This Week at CFA and ICYMI (In Case You Missed It).
- Draft press releases about CFA flagship events, new programs, major gifts/donations, and partnerships with the Boston community and beyond.
- Interview CFA faculty, leadership, students, and staff for news posts and series, such as CFA’s Faculty Features and Beyond the Classroom.
Qualifications
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Confident in interviewing subjects for news and social media stories
- Have written and verbal communication skills and some graphic design experience (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite is a plus)
- Interest in the arts – music, theatre, visual arts – and other related fields including entertainment, sustainability, climate, inclusion, advocacy, and equity

If a student has a desire to learn more about advertising, social media, video, or another specific area of marketing and communications, we’re happy to incorporate those types of projects in your daily tasks.
Salary and Hours
Job # 901284, starting at $16/hour
Hours are flexible and may vary, but will be about 5-20 hours per week (depending on the time of the semester), and can be coordinated around the student’s availability.
This position works at CFA’s Communications office on the BU West Campus at 855 Commonwealth Avenue. Students can choose to work from the office or remotely.
Student applicants must have a Work-Study award to be considered for the position. Pay is $16/hour. All majors are welcome to apply, though traditionally most applicants are communication majors.
