CDS Introduces its PhD Program

We are pleased to announce the inaugural Computing & Data Sciences PhD program which will prepare graduate-level students to make significant contributions to the art, science, and engineering of computational and data-driven sciences. Our vision is to move away from the bounds of traditional academic structure and operate as a free interdisciplinary entity. As a fresh program, the future of CDS will be shaped by its early cohort of scholars and how they carry out the legacy.

To apply, students must have earned a bachelor's or a master’s degree in one of the methodological and applied disciplines related to computational and data-driven areas of scholarship in CDS. Applicants are exposed to a depth of topics covering foundational, applied, and socio-technical dimensions of computing and data science. The program also allows completion of research rotations that expose students to on-going projects; completion of a cohort-based training on ethical and responsible computing; and successful proposal and defense of a doctoral thesis.

At CDS, we hold diversity and inclusion in high regard, which is why we maintain a holistic admission review, and special attention is paid to applicants from under-represented minorities.

CDS is dedicated to providing endless opportunities to individuals who have the drive and the vision to push boundaries and move the field of data sciences forward, and preparing them to pursue careers in which they lead independent cutting-edge research and development agendas in academia or industry.

The future is here. You can be a part of it. Though CDS is new, BU has a long history of inclusiveness. CDS aims to address the compartmentalization of training computing and data sciences - especially at the graduate levels - by providing a flexible and porous alternative that transcends the traditional cultures.
