Looking to innovate the future with an MS in Computer Science? Find out why BU is the right choice to pursue your degree with five reasons we think our Computer Science Programs stand out:

1. Diversity of Programs

BU offers four different master’s programs under our Computer Science department. With a general MS in CS, an MS in CS with a specialization in Cyber Security, an MS in CS with a specialization in Data-Centric Computing, and an MS in Artificial Intelligence. You can choose a specialty or gain a general scope of computer science depending on your future career plans. With only eight graduate-level courses, you will gain an in-depth knowledge of theory, software systems, and applications.

2. Award-Winning Faculty

The Department of Computer Science at BU is widely regarded as among the top computer science programs in the nation, reflecting the quality and commitment of its outstanding faculty. Teaching in both foundational and application areas of computer science,  faculty members have received both national and international awards and recognition

Assistant Professor Renato Mancuso has recently received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award—as one of five recipients—which will provide him with a five-year grant to support his project. He and his team have been working together to make time a controllable aspect of computing systems allowing computers to make decisions at inhuman timescales and without human intervention.

3. Career Outlook

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment of computer scientists is projected to grow 23% from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average of all occupations. Each year, there are about 3,400 job openings for computer scientists projected, on average.

For cybersecurity professionals, the field is expected to grow 31% in the coming 10 years, due to cybersecurity becoming an integral part of businesses and individualism alike. Our MS in CS with a specialization in Cyber Security is the ideal degree to enter this career field.

Boston is a booming hub of technology and startups, allowing our students to pave the way for an exciting internship or career at a notable tech company in the Boston area. These companies include Akamai, Amazon Robotics, Cisco, Dell EMC, Liberty Mutual, GE Appliances, Google, Hubspot, iRobot, Microsoft, Trip Advisor, and Wayfair.

4. Internship Opportunities, Extracurricular Training, and Career Resources

With BU Center for Career Development and dedicated career fairs, students in BU’s Computer Science programs can succeed in a broad range of internship opportunities. While many internship opportunities come outside of BU’s teaching, Course CS 901 allows international students to use CPT for an internship after their first year of study, giving the students substantive practical experience in the computing industry.

In addition to its annual career fair, the department hosts its student showcase, CS Day, sponsors a range of professional development programs such as the Grace Hopper Celebration of Computing event and provides access for their students to numerous field-related outlets.

Boston University Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences houses BU Spark!, an innovation and experiential learning lab for computing, data science, and engineering projects. This program allows students to get real-world experience working on technical projects provided by research partners or be able to work on their own projects with the help of Spark! mentors.

5. Research Opportunities

At the BU Computer Science Program, our students have the opportunity to conduct research in Algorithms & Theory, Data Mining & Data Management, Machine Learning, Networks, Programming & Verification, Security, Systems, and Vision & Graphics. As part of one of these research groups, you will be able to work with experienced faculty and other passionate students. With our research opportunities, the MS degree is also a great pathway to go on to receive your PhD.
