The BA-to-MA Program in Astrophysics & Space Physics is designed for those well-prepared students who wish to obtain a master’s degree by adding a fifth year of intensive study in astrophysics & space physics. The program is offered by the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) in conjunction with the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GRS).
Because the BA-to-MA in Astrophysics & Space Physics requires completion of both the BA in Astronomy & Physics and the MA in Astronomy, students interested in the program should refer to the GRS Bulletin website for important information.

Degree Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes include those for both the
BA in Astronomy & Physics and the
MA in Astronomy:
BA in Astronomy & Physics
- Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the principles of astronomy.
- Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the principles of physics.
- Communicate astronomical information effectively, using a variety of media and methods, and to a range of audiences.
- Think critically and evaluate, interpret, and solve problems related to astronomical topics as well as other technical and general scientific topics.
MA in Astronomy
- Demonstrate graduate-level knowledge of astronomy and physics, including the following topics: fundamental physics and astrophysics; gravitation, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics appropriate to astronomy; and the dynamical behavior of space and astrophysical plasmas.
- Demonstrate graduate-level knowledge of observational techniques used to study astronomical and space phenomena.
- Perform directed research within that discipline.
- Present directed research to a committee of faculty members and to a scientific audience.
Requirements
The requirements of the BA/MA program are those of the
BA in Astronomy & Physics plus those of the
MA in Astronomy.
GPA Requirement
Only those students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 overall and 3.3 in mathematics, physics, and astronomy courses will normally be admitted into the BA/MA program in Astrophysics & Space Physics.
