  1. This article really made me rethink my holiday spending habits. I’ve definitely fallen into the trap of overspending with credit cards because it doesn’t feel “real” until the bill comes. I’m going to try using cash this year—it might actually help me stay within my budget and avoid that post-holiday financial stress. Do you think the same “pain of paying” could be recreated with budgeting apps or other digital tools?

  2. I do agree that using paper money can be an effective tool for deterring overspending especially this upcoming holiday season. Though, I feel like those that celebrate these holidays (Christmas, Black Friday… etc) often make large, substantial purchases not just personal property like sweatshirts or shoes. Some families spurge on new appliances such as a new fridge or even buying a Christmas tree which they do not necessarily have the paper money cash for.

    Another concern too is just the addiction of convenience: everything this season is purported to have some kind of price discount and that people can just pay with a tap on their phones. Even if these reasons are persuasive, it is hard to overcome that habit.

  3. I totally agree! As a student of behavioral psychology, I am reminded of the role of cognitive biases, such as the “scarcity effect,” which can drive impulse purchases during the holiday season. Being aware of these biases and making conscious decisions can complement your wonderful advice about prioritizing meaningful gifts and experiences. I also wonder if promoting financial literacy programs, especially for young people, could help develop better budgeting habits, not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year. This post offers a thoughtful approach to a common challenge , thanks for sharing!
