This Weekend @ BU: September 10 to 13
With classes now in full swing at BU, you may already be thinking about your weekend plans. We’ve put together a fun list of on- and off-campus events. Among them: a chance to unleash your artistic abilities with the College of Fine Arts community, new outlets for recreational fitness, and athletic events.
College of Fine Arts Chalk Fest
Leave your mark on BU’s sidewalks by joining the CFA Chalk Fest, where students are invited to join in on the artistic fun on the CFA plaza (outside the school’s main entranceway). Professional artist Brittany Shepler will be on hand creating a mandala chalk piece (feel free to join in), or you can make your own chalk drawings. There will also be free snacks available.
Friday, September 11, 2 to 4 pm, CFA Plaza
Sunset Kayaking
Get an incredible view of the Boston skyline at sunset from the vantage point of the Charles River. BU Outdoor Programs is hosting a sunset kayak trip that promises a blend of relaxation, natural beauty, calm waters, and stunning views. The trip is $25 for FitRec members, $30 for non-members. Buy tickets here.
Friday, September 11, 5:45 to 7:15 pm, Boston University Sailing Pavilion, Dr. Paul Dudley White Bike Path, Boston.
Learn to Belay
If finding new ways to stay active is on your to-do list, consider taking up rock-climbing. BU Outdoor Programs is offering a course that will teach you all the basics in passing a standard belay class. These classes will be offered every Friday through Sunday (with some exceptions). The class is $10 for FitRec members and $15 for non-members. Pre-registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome.
Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 5 to 6:30 pm, BU Fitness & Recreation Center, 915 Commonwealth Ave., Boston.
BU Men’s Soccer vs Army West Point
Cheer on the men’s soccer team at their Patriot League home opener. They’ll be taking on Army West Point on BU’s Nickerson Field. If you can’t make it to the stands, stream it live here.
Saturday, September 12, 6 pm, Nickerson Field, 285 Babcock St., Boston.
Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival
Take a trip to the historic Chinatown to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. The celebration dates back over 3,000 years, when emperors would worship the moon for a successful harvest. Chinatown’s streets will be filled with vendor booths, martial arts and folk dance performances, and a lion dance celebrating this festival’s importance in East and Southeast Asian cultures. You can also stop into the many local restaurants in the area for lunch or dessert. Admission is free.
Saturday, September 12, 10 am to 5:30 pm, Chinatown.
Sterling Fair Day Trip
Take an opportunity to explore greater Massachusetts by joining the BU Outdoor Programs at the Sterling Fair in Sterling, Mass. The fair features rides, live entertainment, livestock exhibits, and delicious fair food and treats. Round-trip transportation is provided from the FitRec to Sterling Fair. The trip is $25 for FitRec members and $30 for non-members. Tickets are available here until Friday, September 11 at 3 pm.
Sunday, September 13, 11 am to 5 pm. Bus will meet at BU FitRec.
Open Newbury
On Sundays throughout the fall, the city blocks cars from accessing the mile-long stretch of shops and restaurants so shoppers can roam freely. Storefronts also like to take advantage of the extra space by setting up small vendor booths in the streets. Don’t worry if you can’t make it this weekend—Open Newbury continues through October 11.
Sunday, September 13, 10 am to 6 pm, Newbury Street, Boston.
