Classes start Monday and many students are still moving in or are already on campus in quarantine. To keep you occupied in the meantime, Boston University’s Winter Weeks of Welcome program is offering plenty of fun and socially distanced activities. And may we also suggest streaming the BU men’s and women’s hockey games, ordering takeout from a nearby taqueria, or dropping by a local pop-up market?
Los Amigos Taqueria
Boston-area chain Los Amigos Taqueria has a location near the St. Paul Street T stop that serves up some of the best, and affordable, Mexican cuisine you’ll find in the Boston area, although it’s currently available only for takeout or delivery. Try the specialty burritos, like the chipotle chicken for just $7.50 (10”) or $8.50 (12”), or the enticing fish tacos with battered shrimp, mango salsa, and cabbage slaw for $9.50. You can also customize your own bowl or burrito with a variety of fillings like proteins, veggies, and salsas.
Los Amigos Taqueria, 1294 Beacon St., Brookline, is open from 11 am to 9:30 pm, Monday through Saturday, and from 11 am to 9 pm on Sunday.
Zone 3
Check out this unique window shopping pop-up tour consisting of 40 local businesses spread across 5 sites in Allston and Harvard Square. Featured stores are selling great handmade home goods, apparel, and self-care products through January 31. The market includes shops like string&&loop, which sells socks with some pretty cool designs, and Brown and Coconut, where you can grab yourself some great body and face-care products like kale masks and deep cleansing charcoal soap. To keep it as COVID-safe as possible, items and their corresponding QR codes are on display through windows, so you can purchase them through your phone (point and zoom your camera towards the code). Many vendors also sell items through their websites, too.
There are five stops on the tour; find their locations here. You can purchase items with your phone at any time. The pop-up will be open until January 31.
Virtual Escape Room
As part of BU’s Winter Weeks of Welcome 2021, the Student Activities Office is hosting a virtual escape room over Zoom on Saturday night. Players choose from two themes and try to figure out how to escape the room using clues before the clock runs out. Searching for more ways to fill your weekends this semester? Check back on the Winter Weeks of Welcome website for more COVID-safe events coming up.
The virtual escape room begins at 8 pm on Saturday, January 23. Register for free here.
Workshop: Conflict, Conversation and Community
This past year has been a strange and challenging one. Over the next few weeks, BU is offering a workshop for conversation and community through its new Student Conflict Resolution Program. During these sessions, students will learn valuable techniques for managing difficult conversations with friends, teammates, and roommates on topics like wearing a mask and turning down the music while you’re trying to study. Sessions are available both in person and online. You can register here.
Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey
While we can’t watch sports in person this year, BU’s men’s and women’s ice hockey teams are still in action and both will face Maine this weekend. The men will play a triple-header: at 3:30 pm Friday, January 22, 6:30 pm on Saturday, and 3 pm on Sunday, while the women will play at 1 pm on Saturday. You can catch every match live on Sports Live. The men’s Friday game will also stream live on NESN’s website, but you may need to sign in with your TV provider.
