Studies show that students who study abroad perform better academically, are more compassionate toward peers who hail from different nations and backgrounds, and even command higher salaries after graduation. Never mind that they also get to spend a semester in places as alluring as Venice and Zanzibar.
Boston University offers more than 90 study abroad programs—in 23 countries and on 6 continents—and today you can learn all about them at the BU Study Abroad Fall Expo, being held on Marsh Plaza today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students can hear from program alumni and staff, some of whom have come from overseas for the event.
The Expo will include information about updates to existing programs as well as about new programs that have been added to the BU Study Abroad portfolio. For example, the Padua Italian and European Studies Program and the Madrid Spanish and European Studies Program are now open to students with no previous background in the Italian or Spanish languages (find more information about the language requirements here). In fall 2016, an internship option will be added to the Padua Italian and European Studies Program. And Study Abroad expects to launch an engineering program for sophomores in Sydney in spring 2016.
BU sends approximately 2,000 students abroad every year, about 40 percent of each graduating class, according to Meg Lucas (COM’10, SED’14), Study Abroad senior manager of University relations and campus outreach. She describes the Study Abroad Fall Expo as a “one-stop shop for anything and everything study abroad–related.” In addition to general program information, the Expo can show students how study abroad can fit into their four-year plan, and how they can best prepare for a semester—or two—abroad.
Need a reason to open the books abroad? Among other reasons, Lucas says, it’s possible to fulfill general education, major, and minor requirements, learn a new language, and gain professional experience through an internship program. “We hope to highlight the significance of each of these through advising and general conversation at our Expo,” she says.
The deadline to apply for the spring Study Abroad program is Thursday, October 1, and the deadline for summer Study Abroad is March 1, 2016. The application can be found here.
The BU Study Abroad Fall Expo is today, Friday, September 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marsh Plaza. In the event of rain, the Expo will move to the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom, second floor, 775 Commonwealth Ave.
