The 10-story Life Science & Engineering Building at 24 Cummington Mall was evacuated shortly after 11 a.m. today after chemicals spilled in Room 720, drawing responders from the Boston Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit and the BU Police Department. There were no injuries reported.
BU spokesperson Colin Riley said the spill happened when a graduate student accidentally cut his finger, jerked his hand, and dropped a liter bottle containing decahydronaphthalene, a combustible chemical.
Peter Fiedler, vice president for administrative services, says the spill was small and was contained. “The spill was declared a Level 3 hazmat,” says Fiedler. “The building was evacuated as a precaution.”
The Boston Fire Department gave the University clearance to reoccupy the building at 12:45 p.m.
