Annual antique motor rally starts today
Get old-school this weekend at the annual antique motor rally organized by BU’s own Ford Curran, staff coordinator at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center. Curran, a DJ and event promoter as well as a vintage car and scooter enthusiast, has organized a weekend of parties, shows, rides, and competitions for bike and scooter owners from around the country.
The party begins at a meet-and-greet today, July 18, at the Baseball Tavern, 1270 Boylston St. The festivities kick off at 8 p.m. and feature local bands the Allstonians and the Larkin Brigade, a group with a BU connection in lead singer Paddy Keys — better known as Patrick Kennedy (COM’04), an editor and writer in the design and print communications division of BU’s Creative Services.
Saturday afternoon brings the weekend’s keynote event: a group ride through the Emerald Necklace, the collection of Boston parks designed by renowned 19th-century landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The ride leaves at noon from the Howard Johnson Inn Fenway Park, 1271 Boylston St., and passes Jamaica Pond, Franklin Park, the Arnold Arboretum, and Larz Anderson Park before finishing in Allston at Great Scott, 1222 Commonwealth Ave.
The weekend ends with the Classic Motor-Bike Competition and Monster Barbecue on Saturday night at Great Scott. Riders can compete for top honors in the Vespa, European, American, Asian, and moped-style bike categories and enjoy performances by Muck & the Mires, the Curses, and the Sprained Ankles, another BU band, featuring two alums and staffers.
