On the Patient’s Side
SPH Prof Amy Rosen is recognized for her work in public health

As a public health researcher, Amy Rosen is dedicated to pushing for patient safety. She has studied the quality of care delivered to Medicare beneficiaries who have undergone surgical procedures, and she’s developed a model to predict decline in health among long-term-care residents in Veterans Affairs hospitals.
Rosen, a School of Public Health professor of health policy and management, will be honored for her work with a Rx for Excellence award from the Massachusetts Medical Law Report.
The award, which will be presented to Rosen and 29 others at an October 31 ceremony at the Taj Hotel, Boston, honors people in the Massachusetts medical community who take extra steps to promote safety and quality in health care.
“I’ve always been interested in the quality of health care,” says Rosen, section head for the Center for Health Quality, Outcomes, and Economic Research at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Mass. “I watched family members go through the system, and that’s how I got involved on a personal level. Professionally, the research just came my way — meeting the right people at the right time.”
Her research is far from complete, according to Rosen. “We’ve been able to more definitely measure patient safety and assess different settings among hospitals on a national level,” she says. “But there’s still plenty to do: writing grants and keeping the research going, particularly in the ambulatory setting.”
