They plow the snow, keep financial aid flowing, and serve up thousands of meals every day. They make sure the heat and AC are working, schedule classes, process research grants, and keep the BU Shuttle running.

Boston University’s 7,000 non-faculty employees are vital to the everyday functioning of the campus community. Now BU’s Human Resources department and Staff Advisory Council will recognize the unsung heroes among us with multiple staff awards.

By elevating everyday staff contributions that reflect Boston University’s shared values, the awards will help make those values a lived experience across the University.

Human Resources seeks nominations for three awards beginning this spring, open to all current non-represented and represented BU staff members, full-time or part-time, with some restrictions. Nomination links and details about each award and eligibility are available here.

The three awards:

Collaboration, Leadership, Innovation, Communication, and Knowledge (CLICK)

The CLICK award celebrates those who consistently exceed expectations, strengthen our campus community, and advance the University’s mission. The recipient will receive a $1,500 award. This year’s nominations will be accepted through March 6, and the recipient will be announced in late March or early April.

Values in Action

This award will spotlight an individual whose leadership, actions, and value-driven work inspire others and contribute meaningfully to the University’s mission. This award celebrates leadership that drives transformation and fosters a stronger, more connected community. The recipient will receive a $2,500 award. This year’s nominations will be accepted through March 6, and the recipient will be announced in late March or early April.

Thanks for BEING YOU Program

Offers employees a chance to show appreciation for their colleagues by acknowledging their contributions in real time. Fill out a “Thanks for BEING YOU” card at any time before November 30 and email it to the colleague you wish to recognize. Be sure to copy applause@bu.edu so that your colleague can be considered for the “Peer Recognition Champions of the Year” award. Recipients will be celebrated with non-monetary experiences such as lunch with senior leadership, a spotlight in internal communications, a certificate of appreciation, or a day of service with a Boston-area nonprofit.

Current part-time or full-time BU staff members can be nominated for a variety of new awards by their colleagues.

The Staff Advisory Council also seeks nominations for three awards this spring for staff members. Nominations for all three close March 2, and winners will be announced at the end of the month. Nomination links and details are available here.

Spirit of BU Award

This award recognizes and honors an individual whose energy, service, kindness, fairness, and collaboration uplift the community and create a welcoming environment. Through their everyday efforts, this individual embodies the spirit of respect, care, and teamwork that defines our community. The recipient will receive a $1,500 award.

BU Beacon Award

This award recognizes and honors a staff member who influences others through a consistent display of integrity, innovation, and inclusive leadership. Whether leading teams, mentoring peers, or improving systems behind the scenes, their work illuminates the path forward and creates lasting positive change. The recipient will receive a $2,500 award.

Rising Terrier Award

This award honors a staff member who has demonstrated genuine curiosity and significant growth in their BU journey or stepped into a new role or challenge with meaningful impact. The recipient will receive a framed certificate from President Gilliam and a BU token of appreciation.
