WED DS 600: Culture, Ethnicity and Race: A developmental approach
Cultural and racial-ethic differences in development and how these differences translate into counseling practices. We consider several topics including: communication, child-rearing, cognitive development, and schooling. 4 cr. -
WED DS 700: Advanced Seminar in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology
Prerequisite: WEDCE650. - Current and advanced topics in the field of Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology will be covered in this course, which is based on the scientist- practitioner model. Students will learn how to design research projects and evidence-based interventions in the field. 4 cr. -
WED EC 350: Introduction to Early Childhood Education
Presents key topics in early childhood education so that students establish basic understandings of the field, including: historical foundations, the role of the teacher, nature of the young child and the role of play in early education. This course is designed for students who are majors in Early Childhood Education or are considering this field of study. 4 cr. Effective Fall 2020, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Oral and/or Signed Communication, The Individual in Community, Teamwork/Collaboration. -
WED EC 506: Current Issues & Early Childhood Education
Topics pertinent to current educational issues and practices concerning Early Childhood Education. Policy, pedagogical practices, and educational philosophies are among the topics. Course focus varies in response to opportunities such as exhibits and prominent changes in educational research. 2cr. -
WED EC 507: Role of Play in Early Child Education
Examines theories of play and the r. Role of play in cognitive, affective, and social development of the child. Strategies for applying research on playful learning in classrooms are explored; play and creativity. Field observation and analysis. 4 cr. -
WED EC 512: Early Childhood Prek/K Fieldwork
Undergraduate Corequisites: (SEDEC513) - Students work with preschool/ kindergarten grade children and families to integrate theories of child development and culturally responsive developmentally appropriate practice. Students assume increasing responsibility for the management of the classroom, preparation of the environment, and implementation of curriculum. -
WED EC 513: Prek/K Seminar: Integrating Theory, Practice, and Reflection
Undergraduate Corequisites: (SEDEC512) - The integrative seminar, Prek-K, introduces students to the roles and ethical responsibilities of the early childhood educator. Students will examine the role of the teacher in creating learning environments that are responsive to all children. -
WED EC 540: Early Childhood Integrated Curriculum: Literacy, Social Studies and Arts
Curriculum development, lesson planning and assessment utilizing integrated, inclusive, culturally sustaining, inquiry approaches to early childhood curriculum, pre-school through primary. Students critically analyze and adapt existing curriculum and plan original integrated curriculum and assessment in literacy, the arts, and social studies, using national, state, and local standards. -
WED EC 560: STEM and Inquiry-Based Learning
Planning for and assessing inquiry-based learning in classrooms prek-2nd grade, with particular emphasis on STEM. Focus on empowering children and co-constructing learning for deep engagement and sense-making. Analyze and apply standards in science, math, and technology. -
WED EC 571: Socially and Emotionally Affirming Classrooms
Presents socially/emotionally affirming, culturally responsive classrooms for young children (prek-2nd). Explores supporting children's positive participation, building relationships with children and families, teaching social/emotional skills, developing interventions for children with a history of trauma, and behaviors that impede learning. -
WED EC 605: Topics in Child Development and Education
Undergraduate Prerequisites: Wheelock Students Only - Graduate Prerequisites: Stamped approval required. - Analyzes selected aspects of development in young children from birth to middle childhood. In- depth coverage of selected aspects of development in children from birth to seven years. Includes both descriptive information (milestones) and theory (processes accounting for development). Stresses applications of these to early education. Taken concurrently with SED EC 611. Instructor permission required. 4 cr. -
WED EC 608: Primary Practicum
Graduate Corequisites: (SEDEC609) - Supervised minimum 300 hour full semester student teaching in grade 1-2 classroom. Students apply theories of child development and culturally sustaining, developmentally appropriate practice. Increasing responsibility for curriculum, assessment, all aspects of the teacher role culminating in taking lead teacher role. -
WED EC 609: Primary Practicum Seminar
Graduate Corequisites: (SEDEC608) - Students in primary practicum (gr 1-2) meet to acquire and share dispositions, knowledge, strategies for curriculum development, implementation and assessment, teaching practices for anti-racist/anti-bias culturally sustaining learning environments, supporting bi-and multi-lingual learners, promoting social competence, building community, & partnering with families. -

WED EC 630: Child Development & Families in Societal and Cultural Contexts
This course aims to immerse students in major theories and seminal research related to child development and the role of the family. Students will learn about the child's social, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive development between birth and age 8. -
WED ED 120: Exploring Professions that Impact Lives
Through three-week modules, students will be introduced to potential career pathways. Students will examine history, practices, and research. Modules: Child & Adolescent Mental Health, Youth Development & Justice, Child Life & Family- Centered Care, and Educational Design for Transformative Social Futures. -
WED ED 121: Exploring Professions Field Seminar
Field seminar accompanying SED ED 120, Exploring Professions that Impact Lives I. Through experiential learning (field visits, studio work, etc.), students will connect coursework to practice in the respective career pathways. -
WED ED 130: Exploring Professions that Impact Lives II
Through three-week modules, students will be introduced to potential career pathways. Students will examine history, best practices, and current research. Modules: Childhood Education for Diverse & Exceptional Learners, STEM Learning, Action & Impact, Global Citizenship & Education, and Deaf Studies. -
