Advanced study of the Spanish language through the analysis of films and media of the Spanish- speaking world: cinema, the internet, and social media. Topics for Fall 2023: Section A1: Visibilizando a los invisibles. Explores Hispanic film searching to give visibility to people that are or have often been marginalized. This cinematic approach gives us the opportunity to shed light on global issues and challenge society's hierarchical power structures. Section B1: The Music of Protest & Social Change in Latin America & Spain. Through TV series, films, music videos, and musical criticism, students better understand the role music plays in discourses of politics, power, race, and gender in Latin America and Spain. Course includes collaborative music publications and video analyses. Creative work encouraged. Section C1: Traveling North: On Borders & Migration. Explores film on migrations from Latin American countries to the U.S. From hardships to companionships, these films offer insights into migrants' voyage, identity quests and broader understanding of the symbolic space of borders. Effective Fall 2020, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy, Oral and/or Signed Communication.
