This course historicizes digital capitalism by tracing today’s platforms, AI systems, and cloud infrastructures to earlier forms of empire. Moving from nineteenth-century cables and Cold War computing to platform monopolies and digital sovereignty, it examines how extraction, infrastructure, ideology, and subjectivity reshape global power. Effective Spring 2027, this course fulfills a single requirement in each of the following BU HUB areas: Critical Thinking, Historical Consciousness.
