Surveys art made in the United States between 1789 and 1900, exploring the ways that American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists contended with popular democracy, industrial capitalism, abolitionism and the Civil War, settler-colonial expansionism, and the rise of consumer culture. Effective Spring 2020, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Aesthetic Exploration, Historical Consciousness.
