Pro Bono Training – Volunteer Lawyers Project – Short Term Opportunities with the Guardianship Clinics in Probate & Family Court

This nuts and bolts training will give participants a basic understanding of guardianship of minor and guardianship of incapacitated adult cases in Probate & Family Court. Topics will include an explanation of the legal procedures (from filing the petition through establishing a permanent guardianship) and paperwork needed to be filed. Participants will be provided sample materials and practice tips. After the training, students are encouraged to participate in the Volunteer Lawyers Project of the Boston Bar Association (VLP) Guardianship Clinics, which are court based clinics that provide limited assistance to low-income pro se litigants. Clinics are offered: • Suffolk County- Tuesdays, 9am-1pm, inside the Court Service Center at the Edward Brooke Courthouse (24 New Chardon Street, Boston, MA 02114) • Middlesex County- Thursdays, 10am-1pm, 2nd floor atrium at the Middlesex Probate & Family Court (208 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA 02141) Under staff attorney supervision, students can gain experience in interacting with diverse clients and assisting with drafting paperwork and providing legal information for guardianship matters.
