How to apply

The application process is done through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GRS). Applications must be sent to GRS, via either the postal mail or the online application. Do not send any application materials to the department. If you have any questions regarding the application process, please contact GRS .

 

Application Requirements

In addition to completing the online application, we also require:

  • an official copy of your GRE scores
  • proof of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS exams) for international students*
  • unofficial transcripts from any university or college you have previously attended
  • three letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement
  • writing sample (only if applying for a degree in Geography & Environment)

*You do not need to submit proof of English proficiency if you graduated with a full degree from a college or university in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, or New Zealand.

International applicants, please note the minimum TOEFL scores required for admission:

  • Reading section – 21
  • Listening section – 18
  • Speaking section – 23
  • Writing section – 22

Minimum IELTS score: 7.0

Deadlines

For the MA and PhD in Earth Sciences, deadline is:

  • Fall: January 31

For the MA and PhD in Geography, deadline is:

  • Fall: January 31

For all other MA programs (except joint program with IR), deadline is:

  • Fall: February 28
