Public Relations
Minor in Public Relations
This minor is designed for students who want a general introduction to the concepts and practices of the public relations profession. This minor is restricted to College of Arts & Sciences, College of Fine Arts, and College of Engineering students.
Prerequisites for entering the program are a minimum grade of B in CAS WR 150 Writing and Research Seminar or CAS EN 220 Proseminar in Literature, and a grade of B in COM CO 201 Introduction to Communication Writing. The minor should be declared before the end of the second semester of the sophomore year to ensure sufficient time to complete the requirements.
Required Courses
The following five courses are required for the minor:
- COM CM 301 Principles and Practices of Public Relations
- COM CM 331 Writing for Communication
- COM CM 380 Theory and Process of Communication
- COM CM 441 Media Relations (prereq: COM CM 301 and CM 331)
- COM CM 473 PR Lab (prereq: COM CM 301 and CM 331) (2 credits)
Please note: COM CM 473 must be taken twice for a total of 4 credits.
Plus one course from the following:
- COM CM 313 Corporate Public Relations (prereq: COM CM 301)
- COM CM 321 Mass Communication Research
- COM CM 345 Public Relations in Nonprofit Settings (prereq: COM CM 301)
Plus at least two courses from the following:
- COM CM 303 Organizational Structure and Behavior
- COM CM 311 Oral Presentations
- COM CM 409 Persuasion and Public Opinion
- COM CM 535 Political Campaigning
- COM IR 531 Intercultural Communication
A grade point average of 2.3 is required in all COM courses. No transfer credit may be used to fulfill the program’s nine-course residence requirement in the College of Communication. Students must register for COM CO 201 at the College of Communication Office of Student Services (COM Room 123), and for all other courses at the corresponding COM department.
