Celebrating Juneteenth at Boston University and Beyond

Red, green, gold and black swirls to form a female profile on the right side of graphic, with the words "Juneteenth Freedom Day" in the center.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. Also recognized as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, or Emancipation Day, June 19th was deemed a national holiday in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2021 and Boston University quickly added Juneteenth to the University calendar.

In this BU Today video, BU’s senior diversity officer, longtime civil rights activist, former BU trustee, and former president and CEO of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Andrea Taylor (COM’68), explains Juneteenth’s origins, history, and purpose.
