Google Cloud Storage – Overview
The Google Apps suite provided by Boston University includes access to Google cloud storage. Google Drive is enabled by default for all BU Students. BU faculty, staff and affiliates may request BU Google Drives once they have an email account.
Benefits
Google cloud storage is provided for the storing and sharing of work-related materials.
- Google MyDrive: Personal storage space allotted to all Google accounts
- Google Shared Drive: A central storage solution for teams and inter-organizational collaborators.
- Note: BU IST strongly recommends using a Shared Drive to store team or departmental documents. See “Cost” below for pricing details.
Key Features
- Students, Staff and Affiliates granted 15GB of MyDrive Storage
- Faculty granted 150GB of MyDrive Storage
- BU Alumni do not retain access to MyDrive after graduation.
- Shared Drive storage available in 1TB, 2TB, 5TB, and 10TB tiers.
- Storage amounts greater than 10TB need to be purchased in 10TB increments.
- Please note that Google Apps are not currently approved for storing HIPPA or Restricted Use data: https://www.bu.edu/tech/support/storage-options/
Requirements
- An active BU account.
- Shared Drives creation is done by request. Storage must be purchased for each drive, regardless of total data stored.
Cost
- Google MyDrives are provided at no cost to active members of the BU community
- Please review the following cost schedule. Amount due at time of request is based on month and quota size requested.
- All quotas are charged on a fiscal year basis and will renew for the July cost each year.

- Shared Drive requests can be initiated by emailing ithelp@bu.edu
- We may have the Catalogue Request item up by the time this publishes. IF so, we will replace with a link there.
Support Channel
- BU Google cloud storage support is provided by Boston University IS&T. Please submit all questions to ithelp@bu.edu
- BU Google accounts are different from consumer Google accounts. Contacting Google support instead of IS&T may result in getting incorrect troubleshooting information.
