Claude is an AI assistant from Anthropic that helps you write, summarize, analyze data, code, and research through a conversational interface on the web, desktop, and mobile. It is available to purchase by departments under the University’s enterprise agreement with Anthropic.
Please note that access to Claude is provided by license assignment and is only available for departmental purchase at this time. Licensing for students is not available for individual purchase. If your unit is not yet enrolled, please contact IS&T. Developers looking for programmatic access should see AI API Access.
Benefits
The data you share while using this tool will not be saved or used for training the Large Language Model (LLM). Confirm that you are signed in with your BU account (check the account name in the app) to verify that you are using BU’s enterprise version.
Once you are logged into your BU account, data classified as Confidential or below may be shared with Claude. Do not enter Restricted Use data into any Claude tool.
Good to know: the thumbs-up / thumbs-down feedback button sends that entire conversation to Anthropic, so don’t use it on anything sensitive.
Key Features
- Capable models: Choose Claude Opus (most capable), Sonnet (balanced), or Haiku (fastest) to fit the task.
- Projects: Group related chats, files, and instructions so Claude keeps shared context across a body of work.
- Artifacts: Generate documents, code, and interactive content you can edit, reuse, and download.
- Web search & connectors: Optionally let Claude search the web or connect to approved systems, such as Microsoft 365.
- Claude Code & Cowork: Agentic tools that work in your terminal or IDE (Code) or across your files and apps (Cowork) to complete multi-step tasks.
What to Expect
Claude is delivered under BU’s enterprise agreement, with the same data-handling protections that apply across BU’s approved AI tools.
- Not used for training: Your conversations and code are not used to train Anthropic’s models by default.
- Abuse monitoring: Anthropic may use limited usage metadata to monitor for abuse, and content flagged as abusive may be reviewed by a human.
- You own your output: Anthropic does not claim ownership of the content you create with Claude.
- Limited administrative access: A limited number of IS&T administrators may access backend systems only under the Access to Electronic Information Policy.
- Review your results: Like all generative AI, Claude can “hallucinate.” Review output for accuracy and bias before relying on it.
Requirements
- You must be a BU faculty, or staff member with an assigned Claude license and a BU account for sign-in.
Cost
Claude licenses are available for departments to purchase under BU’s enterprise agreement with Anthropic. The cost of a license is:
